I was delivering a leadership seminar at a Business Skills Weekend at Cambridge University recently. I used this video on a lesson in leadership to start a discussion regarding leadership and what it meant to each participant.
A leader should have the knowledge, courage and confidence to take the first step and show others the way. As with the guy in the film, he’s decided to put himself out there and take the chance that others will follow.
There are all sorts of social phenomenom at play when you choose to be a leader. To ensure you are successful it’s crucial that you acknowledge and embrace the people willing to follow your lead, this quickly gives the first follower a positive message which they will then convey to other potential followers.
As the video says “The first follower transforms the lone nut into a leader!”
This is an excellent quote about leadership that really hits the mark:
A true leader has the confidence to stand alone, the courage to make tough decisions, and the compassion to listen to the needs of others. He does not set out to be a leader, but becomes one by the equality of his actions and the integrity of his intent. — Douglas MacArthur
